harley bell began to use photography in his 20’s as a means of forming his own inner dialogue – contemplating his position in the world. bell attempts to explore the psyche by working within the conventions of autobiographical and documentary photography. he considers specific states of being such as loneliness, introspection, self-esteem and hope. bell’s work operates in distancing the subject with the viewer – often obscuring the subject in some way to produce a sense of emotional detachment; recording lone figures in a state of contemplation. his photographs repeatedly provide an escape route; a tiny moment in the frame that seeks out nature amongst the encroaching urban compounds. bell currently resides in perth.
